Top three picks of the 2018 NWSL College Draft
This morning, the 2018 NWSL College Draft was held at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Philadelphia where 40 players advanced in their professional playing career. The final list of eligible players for the draft were released today before the calls were made.
Among the 40 players, the top three picks were Andi Sullivan from Stanford University to the Washington Spirit, Savannah McCaskill from the University of South Carolina to the Boston Breakers, and Rebecca Quinn from Duke University to the Washington Spirit.
Andi Sullivan is the sixth No. 1 pick of the NWSL Draft
The Stanford alum was not present this morning at the United Soccer Coaches Convention as she has been training with the U.S. Women's National Team in Carlsbad, California. Sullivan voiced her excitement in a video that was played in Philadelphia.
“I’m so excited to come back home to the DMV and play with the team that I watched growing up and to come give back to the soccer community that helped me so much throughout my youth,” stated the midfielder in the video.
At 21, Sullivan made her first appearance with the USWNT as she played 74 minuets of the match against Switzerland as a Junior at Stanford. Several weeks later she was in the second round of the NCAA tournament for Stanford and tore her ACL during overtime.
Despite facing the long road to recovery, Sullivan made her way through and was ready to compete with her college and national team.
The Breakers recruit forward Savannah McCaskill
Forward Savannah McCaskill was the No.2 overall pick from the Boston Breakers. McCaskill is the All-American and MAC-Hermann Trophy finalist for national Player of the Year.
“Just thank you to Boston for taking me, and can’t wait to get to work and get out there and get started. Go Breakers,” McCaskill stated.
The South Carolina alum was 21-2-1 and spent eight weeks ranked in the top-five in the nation, which impressed U.S. Soccer coach Jill Ellis.
McCaskill was called to train with the USWNT for January Camp and has the opportunity to possibly make her first appearance with the USWNT for their match on January 21 against Denmark.
Washington Spirit acquire Rebecca Quinn
The Washington Spirit chose midfielder Rebecca Quinn as the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of the draft. At Duke, Quinn recorded 8 goals and 9 assists in 69 caps. The 22-year-old
was named the 2017 First Team All-American and was also a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy.
Quinn has expanded her experience as she has made 33 caps for the Canada International team. Along with Quinn, the Spirit also recruited Schuyler DeBree, another Blue Devil in the eleventh overall pick of the second round.
“I’m so happy. Especially this year, we’ve gotten a lot closer. [Quinn’s] probably the best player I’ve ever played with,” DeBree said.
The Duke alum was recorded as the highest Canadian ever to part take in the NWSL Draft.
