USWNT qualifies for 2019 Women's World Cup

Yesterday, the U.S. Women’s National Team and Canada officially qualified for the 2019 Women’s World Cup after celebrating victories from the Concaf Women’s Championship at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

With Jamaica being 64 in FIFA rankings, the USWNT swept them away in the semi-final match with a 6-0 win. U.S. midfielder Tobin Heath scored the first goal 101 seconds in after a shot was taken by Lindsey Horan.

“Having this feeling and thought in the back of our minds for the last two years — it’s just great to actually qualify and now talk about the road to France and the road to the World Cup,” Morgan said following the match. “It’s a great feeling tonight to qualify.”

Goals followed from Megan Rapinoe, Julie Ertz, and Alex Morgan within the first half, leading the U.S 4-0. By the end of the half, Jamaica had one shot against their competitors as the U.S. had 15 shots on goal.

The USWNT have previously won the World Cup in 1991, 1999, and in 2015. Along with Brazil, Germany, Japan, Norway, and Sweden these countries have all qualified for all eight Women’s World Cups.

In the second half, Morgan scored the final goal of the night from a penalty kick, advancing the victory.

“It feels great. We never took any game for granted. We knew going in that Jamaica was going to be a handful and they were,” defender Becky Sauerbrunn said. “We’re happy with a clean sheet and we’re just thrilled to be going to France.”

The U.S. will face Canada tomorrow evening for the final match of the Concaf tournament at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be aired on UDN and possibly on FS1 or FS2.
