U.S. Women's National Team earns third championship of the year
The U.S. Women’s National Team earned the Concaf Women’s Championship title with a 2-0 defeat against Canada this past Friday.
In total, the U.S. scored 26 goals with none against them in the five matches of the tournament. This win marks their third gold medal of the year as they took the championship title for the She Believes Cup and Tournament of Nations.
“It’s another title. That’s what we’re all about. We want to win. Obviously, we hate Canada. They hate us. That was very apparent on the field today,” forward Megan Rapinoe said. “It was a good performance for us. Really just all tournament. I feel like we took it up another notch.”
Midfielder Rose Lavelle scored in the second minute at the top of the eighteen to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.
Alex Morgan scored her 97th goal that extended the lead for the U.S. with two minutes left to spare in the last half after she finished a cross from Lindsey Horan. In this tournament alone, Morgan scored seven goals.
Morgan was awarded the Golden Boot and was recognized as the Budweiser Woman of the Match. Julie Ertz was the Golden Ball winner of the best player in the tournament, and the U.S. won the Fair Play Award.
“It’s not without my teammates. I mean honestly, the service is just incredible,” Morgan said. “So many players had an amazing tournament.”
The U.S. created five shots on goal whereas Canada had one opportunity within the 90 minutes of play.
