Alex Morgan voted as U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year
U.S. Soccer announced their female athlete of the year and for the second time in her career, forward Alex Morgan has earned this award by U.S. Soccer.
Along with Morgan, the other nominees were midfielders Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, forwards Tobin Heath, and Megan Rapinoe.
“It was an incredible year for the U.S. Women’s National Team, going undefeated, and there were a lot of players that stepped up and played essential parts in leading this team,” Morgan said. “Of the five of players nominated, any one was deserving, so I am incredibly honored to have won this award.”
The voting factor played an important role from a variety of coaches, former players, administrators, council and board members, as well as select college coaches and members of the media.
Morgan has scored 98 goals so far and has lead the USWNT with 18 goals in 19 games with three assists.
This past October she won the CONCAF Women’s Championship Golden Boot award. During this year's Tournament of Nations she completed a hat trick, which marked her fourth within her career. This hat trick put her in third place all-time in the U.S. for multiple-goal games, according to the NWSL.
In her club season with the Orlando Pride, she has recorded five goals with two assists and appeared in over 19 games. In her 1,500 minutes of game time she won 94 duels.
Morgan has been scoring goals for the U.S. since 2010 and within her last 26 games has scored 25 goals in a variety of ways.
Morgan will continue training with the U.S. for the upcoming games announced with U.S. Soccer before competing for the Women’s World Cup in France.
